Designing for Dignity: A convening of possibilities
Deem’s inaugural Symposium is an in-person and online hybrid gathering on Saturday, March 4, 2023, bringing together designers, practitioners, and community members to form dialogues around emergent and liberatory directions within design.
Hosted in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Symposium will explore how design can draw on diverse perspectives to create more equitable and inclusive communities and futures through the following themes: Dignity, Pedagogy, Equity, and Place. Both IRL and virtual audiences will experience thought-provoking presentations and conversations from intersecting voices across disciplines and generations, with a special reverence for the city of Chicago, which will hold this experience for us.
In addition, Deem will organize a three-day Reference Room, located at the MCA Chicago, which will serve as a public gathering space for people to experience some of the reading materials that have inspired its four issues, as well as the content of the convening’s programming. These books, articles, and essays represent a combination of our research, specific mentions from our pages, and recommendations from contributors and symposium participants. It is our hope not only to provide context and access to educational tools around Deem’s processes and beliefs, but also to create a haven for reflection and repose. The Reference Room will be open from March 3-5, 10AM-5PM.
